Hello from the warm and sunny island of Gran Canaria! Since I last checked in with you we have visited Madeira and La Palma and so far we have certainly been lucky with hot sunshine.
I have visited Madeira several times before so I didn’t have anything planned. I went ashore with a few people that I have met since being onboard, in fact we all seem to be joined at the hip. We had a short walk around the town before taking the weight off our feet at a local café. It was incredibly relaxing. Madeira is one of those places where you can take the pace a little slower, no need to rush around just slow things down and go with the flow. The sun was beating down and it was nice to people watch while tucking into a traditional Portuguese dessert, Pastel de Nata, which was simply a cream filled pie. I was incredibly lucky to have a friend in Madeira send some photographs to me of the ship as we arrived. A big thank you to Sergio Ferreira for the below image as it is a great shot of Oceana!
I was very much looking forward to our call in La Palma as it is a place I had never visited and I really enjoyed our time there. The town is just a short walk from the ship and it was almost like stepping back in time in some places. Some of the buildings were incredible! I love to see history and heritage when travelling and La Palma did not disappoint. The sun was shining and the walk through the cobbled streets was just perfect! There were a few short café stops where one could sit and watch the world go by before embarking on another little journey. Certain aspects of the main town reminded me a lot of Cadiz, the mix of old with new and the winding streets that led to all sorts of wonderful places. I would definitely recommend a visit to La Palma.
Today we are in Gran Canaria and as it is a Sunday the majority of places are closed. I took a short walk to a café at the shopping centre directly opposite the port, enjoyed a small bottle of water and then made my way back to the ship to grab lunch, which today was a Scotch egg in Café Jardin.
Tonight I am dining at the Horizon Grill with two fellow passengers and I can’t wait! I don’t even need to look at the menu, I already know what I am having! Tempura king prawns to start and a delicious Sirloin Steak as a main course. If there is space after all of that then I might opt for the mini chocolate brownies with cream, we shall see!
I must tell you about one of the women I have met since being onboard, she is very funny! As we are a few days into the cruise now I have managed to figure out what she means when talking about certain things, for example if she talks about a cutting disc then she is actually referring to a DVD, the internet is the fishing net and Jean Paul Gautier aftershave is simply referred to as the naked man. I don’t think I have ever laughed so much in all my life, but she keeps calling me Chris so I just have to remember she actually means Danielle.
We are in Tenerife tomorrow, I anticipate a lot of shopping shall be done along with maybe an hour or two in the sunshine 😉
