Cruise Ship S.O.S.

I have recently been reading a brilliant book titled Cruise Ship S.O.S. by Ben Macfarlane. It was recommended to me so out and bought it I went and I have not been able to put it down since.

I won’t tell you too much in case you are also reading it or decide you might like too, but I had to blog about it, it really is a great read.

It is basically about the life of a doctor on board a cruise ship. Now the cruise line nor the cruise ship are named but once you read it for long enough I think the choice is thinned down to between two, after all it is a world cruise sailing out of Southampton, it’s not really rocket science to put two and two together.

Anyway back to the good bits, the book is incredibly funny, I literally find myself laughing out loud at some of the things this doctor and his team must deal with whilst sailing around the world. It’s strange because we all know what it’s like on a cruise ship as passengers and we all probably have our thoughts about what goes on behind the scenes but, for a doctor to actually come right out with it and tell the world is what really makes this book a keeper.

One story that gets me is about a man who visits the doctor complaining he is claustrophobic and must be moved to another cabin immediately as his wife and him booked an inside cabin. So the doctor ponders this, they booked an inside cabin for a world cruise? Without giving all of the fun bits in the middle away it turns out this passenger and his wife simply wanted an upgrade. Swore they had never cruised before but booking records showed they had in fact cruised before and more than once. Needless to say they didn’t get their upgrade, boo hoo for them!

I really would recommend this book to all you serious cruisers out there, the read is very funny and it is a great glimpse into ship life from a doctor’s point of view. Having also cruised many times and caught glimpses of the crew area’s it also allows your imagination to really paint a picture of what is going on.

It’s a few years old now so you can pick it up from places like Amazon for a reasonable price but however you get it just make sure you do.

I hope this book is available in Thailand. It would be a great book for a day at the beach.
