This time next week I will be once again exploring the wonderful city of Amsterdam and I am really looking forward to it.
I am travelling with DFDS Seaways aboard King Seaways for my outward journey and Princess Seaways for my return journey. It should be fun and I am excited to once again be sailing out of my home port, Port of Tyne.
The idea with this trip is to sample the “Christmas Markets Mini Cruise” so basically I have one night aboard King Seaways, a full day, evening and half a day in Amsterdam then a night aboard Princess Seaways before disembarking in Port of Tyne.
I wanted to sample the Christmas Markets because I have heard so many great things about them! In fact my mother has enjoyed them several times in Amsterdam and it’s always added to the festive spirit! I love Christmas, no really I LOVE it. I enjoy the smells, food, movies and music, just everything about the holiday season really so I’m raring to get going!
I’ve managed to do a little research and have decided to explore the market that runs along towards Dam Square, the market stalls and ice rink (both Leidseplein and Koningsplein are home to various festive market stalls) that are located at either end of the Leidsestraat and hopefully I can pop along and check out the light festival too, which I am told is certainly not to be missed. Not entirely sure I will try the ice rink as that could end with a hospital visit 😉 but I definitely want to go along and take a look. I am hoping for some roasted chestnuts too.
The ice rink and food stands will be at Leidseplein until 5 January 2014.
The mini-cruise option is great for those looking to escape for just a few nights and enjoy some festivities and of course Christmas shopping. The route runs numerous times throughout November and December, but many of our large cruise ships also make calls to ports where the Christmas cheer is in full swing. Another great one for the markets is Bruges. Whether it be via a mini-cruise with an overnight hotel stay or a longer voyage that simply stops for the day, we can’t resist a bit of Christmas spirit! Well I can’t that’s for sure!
If anyone else has already visited Amsterdam during the festive season I would love to know what you thought about it and of course any hints or tips are always appreciated!
