What is it with this cruise ship? She has been all over the news in recent months and not for the right reasons. Aside from Carnival Cruise Lines having some clear issues across numerous members of their fleet lately, I feel like the Carnival Triumph is being tested by the gods themselves!
So let’s re-cap!
February 10th 2013 – Carnival Triumph loses power after an engine room fire which leaves the vessel adrift. She drifts for roughly 90 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico before she is intercepted by tug boats.
Her time spent entirely powerless meant passengers were sleeping and living in some difficult conditions. There were limited supplies on board and obviously showering and using the bathroom were a challenge.
Finally she reaches Mobile, Alabama after five days stranded at sea.
April 3rd 2013 – Reports come in that Carnival Triumph has broken free from her moorings after severe winds with gusts of up to 70mph batter the Mobile, Alabama, shipyard.
She drifted but this time straight into another vessel. She sustained a 20-foot long gash in her hull which although bad was thankfully above the water level. It now meant however that Carnival had more repairs to schedule for the 101, 509 GT passenger ship.
April 24th 2013 – Several explosions on fuel barges in Mobile, Alabama, caused the Carnival Triumph workers and crew to be evacuated from the vessel. The Coast Guard established a one-mile safety zone around the fires to allow for them to be safely extinguished.
So I’ll ask the question again, what is it with this cruise ship?! Is she cursed? Who knows! But it seems lately everywhere she goes trouble follows.
Carnival Spokesman, Vance Gulliksen, issued a statement on recent events and insisted that “The repair schedule for the Carnival Triumph remains unchanged and the ship is scheduled to resume service from Galveston, Texas, on June 13.”
They say things come in three’s so here’s hoping that this is the end of all the drama for Carnival Triumph and she can get back to sea, where she belongs, in June!
What are your views on recent events with this ship? Has it put you off cruising with Carnival?
