It’s been a while since I checked in with you all on here. A lot changed pretty much overnight between me returning from the Grand Voyage and then the UK going into lockdown – I was only back 4 days when the Stay Home, Stay Safe message started being drilled into us.
I’ve missed talking to you all and sharing updates on my adventures, I should be here now telling you all about my trip around the Eastern Mediterranean with SAGA and who knows what else, but of course, that cruise was cancelled. I’m sure a lot of you have had trips cancelled or postponed, so I thought we should take some time to reminisce and also look forward to what awaits us in the future when we can once again take to the ocean!
This time last year I was in Canada, loving every second of the freezing cold. We sailed past icebergs, I had cuddles with a gorgeous Newfoundland dog, I learned the art of Japanese Kumihimo and I met some wonderful people. Just a few weeks after I returned home, I was off again, on Spirit of Discovery’s maiden voyage around the British Isles. Yes, everything was so exciting and after a few other trips, including Scandinavia, I was embarking on Boudicca’s Grand Voyage. My goodness, where did the time go? Looking back, even on just the last 18 months, I have so many beautiful memories of cruise and I know there are many more to come.
So, the big question is what are you most looking forward to? I know I can’t wait to once again be sitting on the open deck watching the sun set. Those moments were always one of the most priceless experiences of a cruise for me and I know that now they’re even more valuable. I’m looking forward to the smell of warm wood as the deck toasts beneath the midday sun; seeing my wonderful ship families; the muster drill; the tender ride; walking up and down that lovely gangway; the food; the motion of the ocean. I’m looking forward to just about every single aspect of cruising that you could possibly think of.
To say I’ve missed my work and travels terribly over these last few weeks would be an understatement. It’s been awful seeing all of the ships just sitting there at sea and many filled with crew who couldn’t go home, some of whom still can’t. Yes, the world was thrown into a truly unimaginable pandemic and it’s going to take time for us to get out of it, but I do think that cruising will come back stronger than ever before. I’ve spoken to hundreds of people about future cruises and I’d say roughly 90% of those people can’t wait to get back onboard and the vast majority have opted to postpone their cruises rather than outright cancel.
The thing about the cruise community is that it is filled with people who all have at least one thing in common and that’s the sheer love for cruising. How amazing is that first cruise going to be after all of this? I think we will all be overwhelmed with emotion when we next walk up that gangway! It will be a moment that we’ll never forget.

My husband and I have been cruising consistently with Cunard since 2009 and we have loved every minute of it.
We’ve been longing to try Viking Ocean cruises for quite some time now and finally booked one early this year, for October, which had the itinerary starting in Rome and finishing in Miami.
Uh-oh!
So, we feel fairly certain that it won’t be going ahead although we’ve still not heard a word from our travel agent, nor Viking themselves. In fairness, I guess they don’t know. But I can’t imagine us being able to fly from Australia to Italy, and then home from the USA to Australia again.
Uh-oh!
So I guess our Viking experience will have to wait until another year, or two.
I was supposed to go to Hawaii in April and it was the first time I booked a balcony cabin so I was really looking forward to just relaxing on the balcony, watching the sea and doing nothing. I love looking at the water, it is very calming. I really want to go back cruising, but for me personally the US is of limits now due to Trump’s position. I do not feel comfortable going to the US right now in case something happens to me, but maybe a med cruise would be great! So I will be looking for cruises closer to home.
Absolutely can’t wait to be cruising again, it’s so hard to pin down one thing I miss but sitting on the deck watching the sea is a biggie for me, there doesn’t have to be anything else to look at just the sea is fine with me, love sea days! Like you we were on a cruise when everywhere went into lockdown and our three week cruise starting in the Caribbean and finishing in the med became a 2 week cruise as the med ports were all closing so we had 12 days at sea sailing back to Southampton from Antigua. It was a shame we missed some of the ports we hadn’t visited before but we had some great sea days instead and look forward to visiting those ports another time. It will be interesting to see what changes may be in place when cruising does resume (we would definitely miss the buffet)!
