Princess Cruises Celebrates Float Out For Sun Princess – The lines Next-Generation Ship

Princess Cruises celebrates a momentous construction milestone with the float out of the cruise line’s bespoke, next-generation ship – Sun Princess – at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Following the Italian shipyard’s tradition, the float out is marked by a special ceremony where a “Madrina” is named to offer blessings and best wishes for the vessel, celebrating the flow of water into the ship’s building dock. Princess Cruises Hotel General Manager Simona Stumberger was selected to serve in this special role as an ambassador for Princess, because she epitomises professionalism and always delivers service with a smile.

A native of Slovenia where Stumberger studied hospitality management, she began her career at sea in the bar department and further diversified her hotel experience by working in guest services, and hand in hand with the hotel and food and beverage divisions. Stumberger has been with Princess Cruises for nearly five years.

“Simona is the ideal candidate to serve as Madrina of our newest ship, Sun Princess, because she embodies all the best qualities that our company has to offer – an unwavering commitment to service, hospitality and friendliness,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “Sun Princess will usher in an exciting new era for our company and the industry, and we can’t think of a better person to serve in this important role.”

The float out completes the first comprehensive phase of construction for Sun Princess which now transitions to focus on building the ship’s interiors.

Princess also announced that it has appointed Gennaro Arma as captain, leading Sun Princess shipbuilding operations, readiness and delivery, and overseeing the ship’s final stages of construction, working closely with brand’s naval architects, engineers and shipbuilding experts, as well as the shipyard management team.

The 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will offer an array of exciting new dining, entertainment and activity offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories. The ship will be highlighted by amazing, never-before-seen spaces such as The Dome, a transformational entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini, the next-level, brand-iconic Piazza, and three-story Horizons Dining Room that are sure to have everyone talking.

In addition, Sun Princess has been designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Sun Princess sustainability features include:

Fuel and Energy Management

  • Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as the primary fuel and the first ship in the Princess fleet to be powered by LNG. This cleaner burning fuel will significantly reduce air emissions and marine gas-oil to minimize the cruise line’s environmental footprint. With a capacity of 4,000m3 sufficient for almost 9 days sailing at service speed. The secondary fuel is marine gas-oil so no heavy or intermediate fuel oil will be carried on board.
  • Two shore power connections, also known as “cold ironing,” on both the port and starboard side of the vessel to enable the ship to turn off the engines and connect to local electric power to run all onboard services during day-long calls in various ports. Sun Princess is outfitted with custom-built electrical connection cabinets that automatically connect the ship’s electrical network to the local electrical network ashore, reducing air emissions in the ports that support shore power.
  • Another first for Princess to supply sustainable power and better maneuverability to save fuel, Sun Princess will be outfitted with two Azipod propulsions for forward and backward movements and the four largest Controllable Pitch Propellers, known as bow thrusters, on the market for sideways navigation.

Waste Management

  • All Micro Auto Gasification System (MAGS) installed for waste. MAGS is the world’s most compact, efficient and environmentally safe technology to convert a variety of combustible materials into thermal energy – energy that can be used in other systems onboard.
  • Food waste management designed with distributed and centralized bio-digesters and dehydrators as a clean alternative to recycle food waste and reduce use of landfills.

Inaugural 2024 Sun Princess cruises to the Mediterranean and Europe are currently on sale. More ship information and images can be found at www.princess.com/sunprincess.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Unveils Brand-New 106-Night ‘Voyage Of Exploration Around The World’ Cruise

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced a brand-new World Cruise for 2025, inspired by journeys taken by famous historical explorers.

Departing from Southampton on 6th January 2025, flagship Bolette will follow a similar route to the first world circumnavigation by explorers Magellan and Elcano in 1519.

The cruise, which will take guests to destinations including Brazil, Argentina, French Polynesia, Mauritius and South Africa, will also cruise the south coast of Australia as British navigator Matthew Flinders did in 1801, and will call into places visited by the likes of Captain James Cook and Alexander Selkirk – the Scottish Sailor who was the inspiration for the Robinson Crusoe novel.

During the first half of this epic voyage, there will be chances to enjoy the traditional and cultural artforms of South America, with opportunities to learn more about the Samba beats in Rio de Janeiro or learn the techniques of the Tango in Argentina. From here, guests can enjoy scenic cruising to admire the snow-capped peaks and rugged landscapes of the Chilean fjords, and take a tour to see the iconic Iguazu Falls.

Throughout the cruise there will be chances to gain cultural insight into many societies and civilisations and encounter a variety of native wildlife including Magellanic Penguins in South America, Koalas and Kangaroos in Australia or the ‘Big Five’ in South Africa.

This cruise will be unveiled exclusively to members of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Oceans club on 1st March, and will go on general sale on Friday, 3rd of March.

All guests will enjoy up to £600 per person to spend on board plus free door-to-door transfers covering up to 250 mainland miles from the port, with the option to join and return to Liverpool departing on 4th  January for an additional £400 per person for Interior and Ocean View cabins or £500 for Terrace Cabins and Suites.

Martin Lister, Head of Itinerary Planning and Destination Experience at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:

“We have a real passion for curating creative and innovative itineraries, and this Grand Voyages really tells a story – retelling the tales of some of history’s greatest adventurers.

“There are some incredible highlights, from seeing the mysterious Moai statues on Easter Island or exploring the tropical islands of the South Pacific with their volcanic landscapes, turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and pearl trade.

“There’s chances to delve into the origins of music and dance in the birthplace of some of the greatest art forms in the world, or visit St Helena, the isolated British island that was once a crucial shipping port and the place where Napoleon was exiled.

“In each destination there is something not to be missed, and we can’t wait to share all of these experiences with our guests.”

Learn to sail in The Lofoten Islands and Arctic Circle this summer with Rubicon 3

Learn to sail in The Lofoten Islands and Arctic Circle this summer with Rubicon 3
Learn to sail in The Lofoten Islands and Arctic Circle this summer with Rubicon 3

Setting off on a sailing expedition is the perfect way to get away from it all and do something for yourself. Combining this with the chance to learn a new skill in the company of like-minded people and in one of the world’s most spectacular locations and you have all the elements for a truly memorable and individual adventure.

So good news then from adventure sailing experts Rubicon 3 who have expanded their choice of departures to Norway, Iceland, Svalbard, and the Arctic Circle for this summer.

Sailing in these high latitudes aboard one of their fleet of 60ft clipper expedition yachts on specific dates in June, July, and August 2023, this is adventure sailing at its most iconic.

On each voyage there is a real emphasis both on training along coasts with towering mountains, vast fjords, waterfalls and in the far north even ice bergs. In these regions you will see whales, reindeer, eagles, puffins, and might even spot polar bears. This is the land of the midnight sun and Aurora Borealis with summer sailing in a temperate climate and fairly benign sailing conditions.

Participants come together as a maximum ‘crew’ of nine people with many joining as solos in an incredibly social environment. No previous sailing experience is necessary on most trips and under the expert guidance of a skipper and mate, they learn a full range of skills from navigating, helming and sail trimming, right through to how to pick the perfect anchorage. It’s an exciting, hands on environment that attracts people from all over the world.

A 12-day sailing holiday starts from £2,299pp* exploring the beautiful Lofoten Islands and Arctic Norway. Day sailing in its sheltered waters and finding new anchorage points every day in this UNESCO World Heritage listed archipelago of islands. There is time to head ashore to explore and discover, catching fresh fish for on shore BBQs and hiking up the hills for stunning panoramas.

*Cost includes accommodation and food on board the yacht, foul weather and safety equipment on board, use of RIB and kayak, plus expert sailing instruction throughout.  It excludes travel to and from the start of the holiday.

P&O Cruises Announces Performer And Hosts For Arvia’s Naming Ceremony

Chart-topper Olly Murs will lead the line-up of performers at the beach-side naming ceremony of P&O Cruises newest ship Arvia in Barbados later this month.

The award-winning singer will treat guests watching the live broadcast to his best-loved hits as he performs from Heywood’s Beach on Thursday March 16, 2023.

Hosting the ceremony, which will be conducted both on board Arvia and from the beach, will be two of the UK’s most famous broadcasters and DJs, Sara Cox and Trevor Nelson.

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “For our guests watching Arvia’s naming ceremony from home and from Barbados this is a real treat. Olly, Sara and Trevor really do make a star-studded line up which showcases the contemporary entertainment for which P&O Cruises is known.”

Trevor Nelson will take centre stage in Arvia’s Skydome for assembled guests and will introduce the famous bottle smash moment with Arvia’s yet-to-be-revealed godmother while Sara Cox will host the guests on one of Barbados’ most stunning beaches.

Ludlow continued “It is not often that in the depths of UK winter you can be transported to a spectacular white sand, palm-fringed beach in the Caribbean and watch a live performance from one of Britain’s best-loved stars. It really will be a moment to remember.”

Both Trevor and Sara will be sailing on Arvia’s March 11 departure and will host late night DJ sets on board.
